There are things to consider to keep our immunity and health intact as we move into colder and darker days in the northern hemisphere. I would argue that there are 3 levels of immunity to consider to keep dis-ease at bay.
The most important one in my professional opinion is the Immunity of Spirit. Low level of spiritual immunity can/will show itself as depression, anxiety, lack of direction in life and not having a purpose. In Chinese Medicine we call it, discovering our Ming, Our Heavenly Mandate. If you are not in contact with your Ming, it open the doors for our immunity to be compromised, so first and foremost find and live your purpose – The reason you are here on this planet having this human experience. This will boost your health and keep your immune system strong. Is there anything more important?
The second one I call our Mental/Emotional Immunity. It has to do with the people (friends, family, co-workers) we have in our lives and the thoughts that occupy our minds. Do we have healthy boundaries? Are we consistent in honoring ourselves, not allowing people to walk all over us, not putting up with toxic behavior from our fellow humans? Do a scan of your life and the people in it. Is there something or someone I need to let go off, to boost my Mental/Emotional Immunity? What about your thoughts?. Apparently we have around 70.000 of them on any given day. (We have a lot), 99% of them are the same as yesterday. Thoughts, people, bodies, we humans are all made of energy and certain vibrational frequencies. They can either be high or low. If they are high, our Immunity is strong and we experience vibrant health. If the energetic blueprint is low we open the door for “foreign invaders” like unhealthy bacteria, viruses or people to enter our systems and make us more susceptible to sickness. So in the words of the rapper Ice Cube – “You gotta check yourself before you wreck yourself”.
At “the bottom” of our 3 layer pyramid we have what most of us are aware of and what is mostly often talked about when we talk Immunity. Our Physical Immunity. Our physical immunity is compromised when we do not:
1. Dress accordingly to the season and temperature. Scarfs to protect us from external wind and cold. Warm and dry clothes.
2. Proper nutrition according to the season and temperature. You might get away with eating raw and uncooked food all summer, but come Winter we need to adapt. Our bodies need more “Fire”. Like stews, cooked foods, soups and warm drinks. Do you own Chicken Broth. Master your Pumpkin Soup. Stir up a heavenly fresh ginger, lemon, honey tea. Make sure garlic, fermented foods like kimchi and sauerkraut and maybe a daily shot of Apple Cider Vinegar is part of your daily diet. Always keep a bottle of organic Oregano Oil in your medicine cabinet and consider taking Vitamin D if there is not much where you live in this season. But please consult with your local doctor before, as I do not have your medical records and history.
3. Our bodies are made to move to stay healthy. We need our bodies to get flushed with rich oxygenated blood and that comes through movement and breath. I recommend Yoga and Qi Gong. On the latest scientific study from Harvard on which “sport” or exercise was the most beneficial for longevity and overall health Qi Gong came in as Number 1. And I am sure that Yoga is as equally beneficial. Mostly because Yoga and Qi Gong are the only body exercise schemes created, that moves the body in all planes and directions. They mimic Nature. Secondly because they incorporate the Breath and Spirit as an essential part of the movement practice.
4. Breathing and/or Meditation. Our skin is the outmost layer of our body. It is the last frontier to the outside world with all that is coming towards us. In Chinese Medicine our skin is connected to our lungs and therefore our breath. Having a breathing or meditation practice will boost our Immunity immensely and it is paramount for healthy living.
If we can find a way to incorporate all of the above Immunity Booster recommendations we will have a Self Care Love Armour that no “foreign invaders” can penetrate.
